  1. During a holiday in Philadelphia sum three or four weeks ago we ventured into the local Chinatown and its malls and beheld a sign that read WARNING STEALING WILL GET YOU TO MEET THE LOCAL POLICE Whether it was just the excessive heat and or exhaustion we were all crippled by at this point of the journey or not I m unsure, but we all fell apart laughing and upon discovering this book back at home at a nearby bookstore I just had to have it Oodles of fun and hilarity at the misfortune of failed at [...]

  2. I started reading this book just as my husband fell asleep beside me.He was not amused when I woke him up with my giggles which quickly turned into uncontrollable laughter I was given the book by one of my Japanese EFL students who had found it funny and was proud that his English was such that he could correct the errors As a native English speaker who has attempted to learn Spanish, French, Italian, Russian and Japanese with varying degrees of success, which included making gaffes not unlike t [...]

  3. This book was an amusing enough read but not nearly as funny or hilarious as the reviews said it was What really bothered me is that the book contains quite a few inaccuracies there s no such city as Algericas in Spain, it s Algeciras , translation mistakes of its own p t de maison in France , I don t think so and that some of the supposedly hilarious translations are only funny if you re ignorant of the culture uses of the concerned country the fact that no children are allowed in maternity war [...]

  4. Hilarious This book is a light read that shows readers the importance of language, terminology and the common mistake of doing literal translations from one language to the other I don t think it means to offend the people of the country for this mistakes If I saw signs like these in my own language, I would cry laughing too A fun, relaxing read for anyone that had a bad day

  5. Es un libro muy divertido que cualquiera puede disfrutar Perfecto para sentarte y disfrutar de unas cuantas desventuras al d a.

  6. One of my friends gave me this book A few years ago, another friend gave me a similar book that collected strange Japanese in foreign countries These books are good for me to know some mistakes and errors that non native speakers tend to make But honestly, I didn t like both this one and the Japanese one. When I find strange Japanese sentence abroad, yea, I laugh and sometimes take a picture of it But I understand that someone who made the sentence tried to tell something to us in our language So [...]

  7. A fun read with the title most apt overseas countries translate our English into all sorts of rubbish but I wonder if we could do any better in, say, Swedish, Portuguese, Chinese etc Well at least we would make every effort to get it right, unlike many of the examples in this enjoyable book.At least a Chennai, India, newspaper does itself proud with its announcement Our editors are colleged and write like the Kipling and the Dickens , unlike the CV mishap which stated I am a rabid typist And the [...]

  8. SUCH GREAT FUN Borrowed and consumed cover to cover in an hour or so oops The warning about not reading on public transport is very apt I was actually laughing out loud on a number of occasions Very simple premise, but completely brilliant Here are a few of my favourites there are lots CHINESE temple Please take one step forward and crap twice.Hotel in JAKARTA Please tell the public not to kill themselves on hotel property if they want to die It only confounds us They can do it in the river for [...]

  9. I thought I d try this book out to see some of the problems translators face The book is a humorous collection of real life examples of when translators translating into English have made embarrassing mistakesTranslation agency s advertisement in the Moscow Times Bet us your letter of business translation do Every people in our staffing know English like the hand of their back Up to the minuet wise street phrases, don t you know, old boy.On a Japanese food package This cute mild curry uses 100% [...]

  11. Not as funny as I initially thought it would be there are some good chuckles, then some odd ones you really don t get or, I didn t , and then those where you can to totally see what they re trying to say and the wrong alternative doesn t really mean all that much by itself. Then there are a few that are technically correct, but could be understood the wrong way, which are quite interesting. This book definitely provides a brain workout, especially for someone who isn t a native English speaker, bu [...]

  12. While better than a lot of other similar books that all seem to turn to beating the same dead horse machine translations from China and Japan for material, it still didn t impress me much It relies on never wondering why something is written or translated the way it is Just pointing fingers and giggling at imperfect English Or even normal English that would just not be commonly used in a native English speaking culture Look at those funny cultures with ideas different than mine Hahaha It left me [...]

  13. Hilarious Unhappy it is I here have not bedroom with bath A bathroom with bed I have I can though give you a washing with pleasure in a most clean spring with no person to see There is a French widow in every bedroom, affording delightful prospects Please tell the public not to kill themselves on hotel propriety if they want to die It only confounds us They can do it in the river for example Brain Location Service All customers promptly executed Taiwanese puzzle toy Let s decompose and enjoy ass [...]

  14. Picked up at a flea market, thinking it was a completely different book than what I ended up reading. There are a few amusing lines, but the whole concept just felt outdated and boring considering what you can find online and on social media.I also feel irritation towards the fact that the whole world is expected to be fluent in english.

  15. One of the funniest things I ve ever read, had me laughing so hard I was crying Some of my favourites Please keep shutters close or monkey make you crazy In case of fire, if you cannot open your door, move to window and expose yourself This hotel is a home from home Of course, most deaths occur in the home.

  16. Very interesting read, really tickled me And I totally agree to the Review on the front cover, this book is too funny for Public Transport

  17. An entertaining read not all good but a great coffee table book, i wouldnt say it s worth 9.99 as stated on the back like a 4 book really luckily i got mine for 50p

  18. Terrible Not even remotely funny The book lacks knowledge on language itself, which is ironic considering it parodies direct English translations of foreign languages.

  19. A funny idea but ultimately unsatisfying Not enough about the language too many digs at foreigners attempts at English.
